Durban - An alleged burglar stripped naked by an angry mob in Musgrave on Wednesday afternoon may have links to a brutal stabbing during a home invasion just a day before.
The man, who was detained by police after he fled to a rooftop to halt his mob-beating, remains in custody.
Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that on Wednesday the man was detained on charges of possessing a dangerous weapon.
"We can confirm an incident that occurred at about 11:00 where police arrested a 36-year-old male for possession of a dangerous weapon. He was detained and will appear in court soon," he said.
"An investigation will be conducted to ascertain if he can be linked to an attempted murder incident that occurred at Windmill Road where a female was stabbed several times," Zwane added.
The woman remained in a serious but stable condition in a Durban hospital.
Caught stealing a laptop
Yesterday Wayne Grundy, the owner of the home where the suspect was caught, said he was in Pinetown when he heard about the drama playing out at the property he lets to students.
"From what I know this chap was accused of robbing a property next to mine. Apparently he was trying to nick a laptop."
Grundy said the man was spotted and tried to make an escape by scaling a wall topped with razor wire and leaping into his property.
"From there he ran into the house and was confronted by the students there. At some point he then jumped through a plate glass window but was then cornered in a gated veranda. He then ran back through the house," he said.
At some point a group of nearly 40 people got hold of the alleged thief and stripped him naked while beating him up.
