DA MP tackles 'racist' restaurant on Twitter

Cape Town - DA MP Phumzile van Damme has taken to social media to speculate whether a Durban restaurant turned down a booking from her because she is black.

In a tweet Van Damme said: "I call to book a table at a restaurant-fully booked. My white friend calls 5 minutes later- table available. Coincidence? I think not."

She said her sister called back again and the restaurant was suddenly full again.

"My sister called 5 minutes later & it was suddenly fully booked again. Racism exists because we allow it room to thrive. Nah, son."

She however was taken to task for not naming and shaming the restaurant, and refusing to boycott it.

"I will not boycott. I am entitled to go anywhere I like & go I will. Let's just say the restaurant will hear from me tonight," she said.

She later says that before she named the establishment and opened herself up to be sued, she called them on her way there and they gave her a table.

Some Twitter users however used the incident to take a dig at Van Damme and her party.

Esethu Hasane, a spokesperson at the ministry for sport and recreation tweeted: "And Puhlease [sic],you cant complain about racism when you're it's face & spokesperson. You are black and represent racists"

@zukoZEKA tweeted: "Phumzile Van Damme has got the publicity that DA wanted, to try prove that DA black people get racially attacked too so DA isn't racist mxm."
