Johannesburg – Ten people have been killed and scores left injured in a spate of accidents, making it a deadly start to the weekend on South African roads, officials reported.
Seven people died and 10 were injured in a horrific crash in Soshanguve, Tshwane when a minibus and a delivery bakkie collided, road traffic management corporation spokesperson Simon Zwane said in a statement.
"Three of the deceased were from the bakkie, while the other four and all the injured were from the minibus. The drivers of the vehicles are among the deceased," he said.
Emergency workers and officials from a range of services attended the scene on Soutpans Road and the injured were rushed to hospital.
The roadworthiness of the bakkie will be investigated. "Investigators have observed that the vehicle was in a poor mechanical condition," Zwane said.
Deaths, multiple injuries
Meanwhile in Shallcross, Durban, three people were killed and four left seriously injured after a car and taxi collided.
The bodies of two men and a woman were found lying amid the wreckage at the scene on the corner of Wiltshire Road and Hans Dettman Road just after 07:00.
They were declared dead on the scene, said ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak.
Four others were taken to hospital for further treatment. Local authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
Also in Durban, two separate taxi accidents which took place on Friday night have left more than 30 injured.
In the first accident, two taxis collided on the N3 west-bound just after Brickfield Road at approximately 18:30.
"Multiple people were injured, including a pregnant lady… Approximately 20 people were transported to various Durban Hospitals," said Rescuecare operations director Garrith Jamieson.
About an hour later, a taxi smashed into the back of a car on the same highway.
"A total of 11 people had sustained various injuries and were stabilised on the scene before being transported to… hospital."
