Durban cycling tragedy: Man held for drunk driving

Durban - A motorist who ran down two cyclists on a training ride in Durban on Sunday morning was allegedly drunk.

The two, who have yet to be named, were killed when they were struck by a VW Golf GTI on the M4 Ruth First Freeway near Durban North.

They were part of a group of cyclists on a training ride ahead of the Argus Cycle Race in March.

Paramedics said a car travelling away from the city struck the two riders and flung them into the road.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said the two were pronounced dead at the scene.

“Police arrested a 33-year-old driver and he will be charged for drunk driving and culpable homicide,” he said.

While the police’s Collision Unit was gathering evidence at the scene, another alleged drunk driver crashed into the police car.

“He was also arrested for drunk driving and reckless and negligent driving. Both suspects will appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court soon,” Naicker said.
