Johannesburg - A Soweto man has been arrested for allegedly killing his toddler son who he initially reported as missing, Gauteng police said on Saturday.
The boy, 13 months old, was last seen at his Jabulani home on Wednesday evening, said police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele.
When the father reported the boy’s disappearance, he said he had left him with a woman he had recently met, while he went to buy cigarettes at a nearby shop.
He said he arrived home to find the pair missing.
The boy’s body was found behind the Shoprite in Zola.
Makhubele said the father allegedly killed the boy, put his body inside a sport bag and dumped it in the reeds.
A bag, a shirt and a Qur'an were collected as evidence.
The 41-year-old was arrested and would appear in the Protea Magistrate’s Court soon.
