Free State ANC in bid to stop infighting

Bloemfontein – The Free State ANC will meet party members in Hennenman on Sunday to address conflict about the nomination of councillor candidates.

"It is very bad because our members are fighting amongst themselves and burning things which they will need once everything settles," provincial secretary William Bulwane said on Thursday.

At least two branches in Hennenman were reportedly unhappy with the selection of councillors for the August 3 local government elections.

On Friday, April 22, police arrested eight people for public violence in the area during a protest over the candidates.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Mamello Mokhuoane said residents had blocked the R70 in Hennenman on the Thursday night, preventing children from getting to school the next morning.

Police used water cannons to disperse the protesters.

"We are not going to allow anarchy in the ruling party," Bulwane said.

"Members should nominate an ANC councillor or we will elect one for them. We must defend the ANC and provide leadership," he said.

The party would discuss similar concerns with its members in QwaQwa on Sunday.
