Gugu Zulu hailed as hero at memorial

Johannesburg - Gugu Zulu was a hero and a professional, according to many who paid tribute to the South African car racing legend at his memorial service on Tuesday.

He made motor sport more accessible and was part of numerous causes to help others, former racing driver Stephen Watson said at the event, held at the Kyalami racetrack.

“You were a selfless soldier,” he said.

He recalled how Zulu went to the US, to the Skip Barber Racing School.

“You stood there and your toes were coming out of the front of your boots. You stood proud and all you cared about was being faster than them. You made it clear you would have raced in your socks if needs be,” he said.

Ibumba Foundation founder Richard Mabaso was with Zulu during his last hours on Mount Kilimanjaro, where he died last Sunday.

He was part of the Trek4Mandela expedition, which raised money to buy sanitary pads for schoolgirls so they did not have to miss school during their periods.

“Through Zulu's involvement we have so far collected over R3.6 million pads. We have 350 000 girls who will be staying in school because of Zulu's dedication to humanity.”

Mabaso said two financial institutions donated 633 000 sanitary towels.

“This man has left us something called a legacy,” he said.

‎Nelson Mandela Foundation chief executive officer Sello Hatang said ‎Zulu would be remembered on Mandela Day.
