Hell or high water as police end up in floating cop car

Cape Town  Police officers had to abandon their official vehicle when, during a high speed chase, it plummeted down an embankment in Strand and ended up submerged in deep water.

The incident happened in Strand on Saturday, Western Cape police confirmed.

“Strand SAPS members drove the police vehicle into a ditch while chasing a suspect and lost control [of] the vehicle,” said Captain FC Van Wyk.

The incident took place in Broadway Road after a police vehicle chased a robber who had earlier stolen a bicycle at gunpoint.

But the police then lost control of the vehicle and it slid down the embankment and into the water. The police officers exited the vehicle unscathed.

“The stolen bicycle and toy firearm that was used by the suspect were recovered,” Van Wyk said.

The robber is still at large.
