It is understood that a Durban Transport bus and a minibus carrying school children collided head on.
The force of impact sheared the taxi in half, and pushed it onto the roadside.
KwaZulu-Natal education department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said the latest death was that of a pupil from Sivananda High School.
"This learner sadly passed away after spending 12 days in hospital. The learner was one of the survivors of the taxi and bus accident that claimed four lives on the morning of 11 January in Ntuzuma," he said.
The name of the pupil has not yet been released.
