Cape Town - A man who handed himself over to police last month will appear in the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court on Tuesday in connection with the rape, mutilation and murder of Anika Smit.
André van Wyk, 26, was at his last court appearance referred for psychiatric evaluation to determine his mental state and is being kept in a single cell the Kgosi Mampuru II prison.
The State is waiting for a bed to be available at Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital.
Smit was found brutally murdered in her father's home on April 10, 2010, with her throat slit, her hands removed and a bottle sticking out from between her legs.
Smit had stayed away from school with an ear infection on the day of her murder and appeared to have opened the door for her attacker.
News24 previously reported that three "persons of interest" became central to the case, including her father.
Another was a friend of hers, Damian Treeby, who was dubbed "the vampire" for his name on messaging application Mxit.
Smit's boyfriend Nico Venter was accused of killing her, but the charges were withdrawn.
