Cape Town - Western Cape Social Development MEC Albert Fritz warned social grant recipients on Tuesday of a scam involving people being asked to divulge their pin numbers in exchange for a Christmas hamper.
Fritz said he received a tip-off about a scam involving a person claiming to be from the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa).
He urged grant recipients never to divulge their social grant details or pin numbers to anybody.
"The scammer would claim to be offering a 'R400 Sassa Christmas food hamper' in exchange for supposed 'survey information', which includes asking for the pin numbers to Sassa cards of social grant recipients," said Fritz.
The provincial department has no operational control over Sassa.
Fritz said they had alerted Sassa to the scam and asked them to investigate.
Sassa could not immediately be reached for comment.
