Polokwane - The uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans' Association (MKMVA) in Limpopo on Thursday called on the government to increase funds allocated to investigate and repatriate the remains of freedom fighters who died in foreign countries.
Provincial secretary Jack Velile said it was disturbing that the country's budget did little to ensure that those who died outside of the country's borders fighting against apartheid are returned home.
"We expect Treasury to meet soldiers' families halfway and repatriate the bodies of soldiers who died in other countries," said Velile.
Velile said it is saddening that more than two decades after democracy repatriation was still not a priority.
He said even worse was that the ANC government is failing to address issues facing former soldiers.
Velile also revealed that the company established to help create jobs for soldiers was blacklisted because it could not honour its financial obligations.
He said when he took over the account it had no money in it.
Velile said the organisation will be investigating who benefited from soldiers' funds and how.
He also used the briefing to launch a verbal attack against former SA National Defence Force chief Siphiwe Nyanda and Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Thabang Makwetla who are part of the steering committee of the MK veterans' council whose formation was seen as a challenge to the MKMVA.
Velile dismissed the council as a group of disgruntled leaders.
