Cape Town - A Cape Town DJ has received more than the prayers and positive vibes he requested on Facebook after social media users offered cash donations to help his mother pay for surgery that will prevent her from possibly going blind.
Chris Taylor's mother, Jacqui, a graphic designer living in Zimbabwe, suffers from a condition that requires her to undergo an invasive eye procedure.
This however comes with a price tag of $500 (about R7 000).
He asked people to support his mother's business via an art sale website - where she sells her prints on items such as duvets, phone covers and pillows - to help her cover the cost of the surgery.
Prayers, thoughts, love and positive vibes "would also be great," he'd urged.
Jacqui underwent the procedure on Friday morning.
"It went well," a relieved Chris told News24.
"And the response has been amazing. I am overwhelmed – people have been fantastic and really supportive."
Direct deposits
A wave of protests directed at ongoing economic hardships has recently hit Zimbabwe.
Chris grew up in Harare and started DJ-ing at house parties and birthdays when he was 15.
He moved to South Africa for bigger opportunities.
In his video appeal, Chris said the current situation in Zimbabwe made it difficult to get money in and out of the country.
A number of people have offered cash donations and Chris plans to open a South African account to allow donors to make direct deposits.
"Someone will then take it down to her so that she can pay her bill," he explained.
While there have only been three or four sales on his mother's website so far, Chris said this was enough to make a sizeable dent in the cost of the procedure.
