No arrests in Cape cyclist's hit-and-run case

Cape Town - A case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated by Western Cape police after a 52-year-old cyclist was hit by an unknown vehicle and left in a critical condition.

Alroy Davey, 52, a member of the Kinetic Cycling Club, was seriously injured in a hit-and-run accident on Klipheuwel Road near Durbanville on Saturday.

An eyewitness said a white double cab bakkie hit the cyclist from behind, and drove off without stopping, Western Cape police confirmed on Wednesday night.

Police were on Thursday reviewing CCTV footage of the incident in the hopes of identifying the vehicle's registration number. No arrests have been made.

The bumper of a Toyota Etios had initially been found at the scene, and was thought to be evidence from the hit-and-run.

O'Ryan Bruintjies, chairperson of the cycling club, told News24 on Thursday that investigators have ruled out the bumper being connected to the incident, saying it was an "old bumper" that had been there all along.

Police are now focusing their energies on finding the white double cab bakkie.

Davey is currently in intensive care in a Cape Town hospital after an eight-hour-long operation on Sunday and another on Wednesday evening.

The cyclist, who was on his way back from a training cycle in Malmesbury at the time of the accident, broke his pelvis and ribs and his back is severely damaged, his wife Linda said.

Tips for safe cycling

Davey's incident is the second to make the news in as many weeks.

Popular cyclist Randall Februarie was killed while out on a Sunday morning ride on July 31 by a motorist who tried to beat a red robot in Cape Town, News24 reported.

The Pedal Power Association (PPA) mourned the death of the husband and father of three, who died on the scene from his injuries, and sent out safety tips for all road cyclists.

1. Light up

"It's illegal to ride a bike in the dark without lights and reflectors, so make sure your bike has good lights, fitted where they can be seen (white in front, red at back)," tip number 1 read.

2. Be seen

"Reflective clothing should be top of your list. Use knee and ankle strips too as the constant movement can alert drivers to your presence. Wear bright colours – keep dark colours for organised events."

3. Make yourself visible

"You should always be at least 50cm from the pavement, and sometimes even further if there is debris on the road. Positioning yourself further into the road makes you more visible and forces cars to overtake properly or wait until it is safe to do so."

According to traffic regulations, motor vehicles are allowed to cross a solid centre line in order to obey the 1m passing distance, provided it is safe to do so.

4. Lastly, always wear a helmet
