Police condemn Limpopo mob justice

Polokwane – Authorities have condemned the murders of two men who were burnt and stoned to death by a mob in Mecklenburg, Limpopo, late on Sunday night.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo on Monday said the mob had also torched two cars and broken all the windows in a six-room home in Sekopung village.

Mojapelo said that, after a community meeting on Sunday, a group had concluded that Kgadi Dibakwana, 17, who recently went missing, had last been seen with a resident, 25-year-old Doctor Maile.

"The girl was alleged to have accompanied the deceased to collect money he owed the girl's family."

Maile then told the mob that Dibakwana was with 75-year-old James Malapane.

"Maile was then marched to [Malapane's] house and when the girl was not found, the mob started stoning both [men] and set them alight. They, thereafter, torched [Mapane's] two vehicles and smashed the windows of his house.”

Malapane’s nine family members, including two wives, escaped the ordeal unharmed.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba said police would hunt down those responsible for the murders.

"We cannot allow communities to continue adopting this trajectory of taking the law into their hands. Anybody who took part in this brutal attack will be dealt with mercilessly."

Anyone with information on the incident should contact Lieutenant Colonel Ngele on 071 210 6628.
