Pretoria - A 23-year-old woman appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on Friday for allegedly conning an online buyer out of more than R30 000 in a nappy order which never materialised.
Roxanne Van Wyk was remanded in custody as she was wanted for several other cases, Tshwane Cluster police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said in a statement.
"The complainant alleged that she saw an advert on Gumtree about an opportunity to buy and sell nappies from a company known as NKE Babies," Selepe said.
The victim deposited R32 735 into Van Wyk's account and despite inquiring about her order, it never materialised.
"The complainant reported the matter to police and after following information, the suspect was arrested in Montana, Pretoria."
Selepe warned the public about criminals using online ads to defraud consumers.
"In this matter it was fortunate [that we managed] to trace the suspect. In other cases it's difficult… because some other sites do not vet or take identification details from their users."
