Cape Town – The Economic Freedom Fighters on Thursday said the "red tide" in the Western Cape was gathering strength daily and they had a fighting chance of claiming some municipalities.
Provincial chair Bernard Joseph told journalists they had their eyes set on getting 15-20% of votes in the Cape Town metro. He was speaking at the announcement of a 100 apparent DA members and supporters joining the EFF.
DA Cape Metro chair Shaun August however said:"We don't know about them, they have never been involved in the branches."
Joseph said they were "going to make it our work to push this DA government below 42% and then create that opportunity for a coalition in the city".
He said they would like to see the DA and ANC working together because they were "birds of the same feather".
"Good governance se voet [be damned] in terms of the DA in the administration of the Western Cape."
The EFF's focus was on the issues of crime, water and sanitation, and free electricity.
"Each and every day we receive applications for membership of the EFF. We welcome our new fighters to this organisation but there is no time to celebrate," said Joseph.
Provincial secretary Melikhaya Xego could not provide figures for new members.
Councillor candidates in every ward
He said the party did daily door-to-door campaigning but had not tallied their numbers yet.
"We have 75 branches launched in the city of Cape Town with more than 100 members. In Ward 104, Du Noon, we have more than 3 000 members of the EFF."
They had nominated councillor candidates for every ward in the city.
DA Cape Metro chair Shaun August said Joseph and the EFF were "living in a dream" for thinking they could win the city over.
He said one just had to look at the city's budget to prove that the DA spent millions on the poor.
The EFF also had its eyes set on the Drakenstein, Stellenbosch, Breede Valley and George municipalities.
Joseph said they would not appoint any mayoral candidates.
"We believe that the people we have nominated for branch leader and appointed from the PR list are able to do the work on the ground," he said.
"Our work is very simple in the EFF - it is to ensure we radically change the lives of our people."
