Robber shot in leg after gang opens fire on police

Cape Town - An armed robber was shot in the leg while his accomplices escaped after a shootout during a heist at an Mfuleni shop on Tuesday, Western Cape police said.

A taxi driver told a police patrol about a robbery happening nearby at 11:30, Captain FC Van Wyk said.

“As the police moved in that direction, shots were fired at them by men who were pretending to be bystanders near the spaza shop. Police members returned fire and one man, who was inside the shop with the owners, robbing them at gunpoint, was shot in the leg and arrested.”

Three men escaped, leaving behind their getaway vehicles, a rented Hyundai and a white Ford bakkie, which were parked behind the shop.

The injured man, a 25-year-old from Site C in Khayelitsha, would appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of business robbery.

Van Wyk said further charges could be added.
