Pretoria - National Director of Public Prosecutions Shaun Abrahams, who has adopted an almost hermit-like existence of late, has finally emerged in public.
Abrahams, who is known affectionately by his mother as Pikkewyntjie (small penguin), was initially spotted at the North Gauteng High Court last week at the inquest into the death of Ahmed Timol.
On Thursday, he was spotted seated on stage at an event on the fight against gender-based violence in Tshwane.
Abrahams, who once told News24 that his favourite movie was Gladiator because "It tells you a lot about my character", has been criticised of late for his lack of public appearances and comments, as well as his less than gladiatorial approach to big profile cases.
City Press reported at the weekend that two senior prosecutors in the investigation into the controversial Gupta family, say they do not think the leaked emails concerning the family will be admitted into evidence because prosecutors and investigators believe they were stolen.
The NPA however rejected reports that there was insufficient evidence for the investigation.
There has also been criticism against a perceived lack of action by the NPA in the separate assault cases of deputy higher education minister Mduduzi Manana and Zimbabwean first lady Grace Mugabe.
In July, a number of memes and cartoons about Abrahams were published, including a parody Pink Ladies "missing person" flyer. The NPA at the time criticised the flyer, saying he was not missing and was busy doing his job.
