Shots fired as robber targets pupils during break

Rustenburg - An armed man fired shots and robbed a group of pupils during a break at Grenswag High School in Rustenburg on Thursday, the school said.

The man tried to steal their cellphones on the school’s sport fields, teacher Anne-Marie Vorster told News24.

“He fired shots during the attempted robbery but fortunately no one was injured,” Vorster said.

Police, the community forum and other private security sectors acted swiftly, she added.

The man ran away.

Vorster said the teachers and the principal quickly had the situation under hand. She denied a rumour on social networking site Twitter that one of the teachers was shot and wounded.

The robbery attempt happened at 09:00 on Thursday morning.

The pupils were sent home.

School would continue on Friday, she said.

Police spokesperson Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said two cellphones were reported stolen
