Slain cyclists: 'Drunk' driver out on R10 000 bail

Durban - The man charged with culpable homicide and drunken driving after allegedly running down two cyclists on a training ride has been released on R10 000 bail on Monday.

He made his first appearance in the Durban Magistrate's Court.

Omesh Ramnarain, 32, was arrested on Sunday at the scene of the crash in which cyclists Richard da Silva and Jarred Dwyer were killed.

Da Silva and Dwyer had been part of a group of cyclists taking part in a training ride on the M4 Ruth First Freeway when, at about 05:00, Ramnarain struck them while travelling in his VW Golf GTI.

Ramnarain was charged which two counts of culpable homicide, as well as single counts of drunken driving and reckless and negligent driving.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said that Ramnarain had been released on bail of R10 000.

"The matter has been adjourned to March 30 for further investigations," she said.

She added that Ramnarain, of Phoenix, would have to report to his nearest police station as part of his bail conditions.
