Slow start to May Day rally ahead of Zuma's address

Pretoria  The Workers' Day rally in Moretele Park got off to a slow start on Sunday morning as people trickled into the Pretoria venue.

People milled about in front of the stage wearing African National Congress, SA Communist Party (SACP) and Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) shirts as they waited for the programme to start.

Cosatu spokesperson Norman Mampane said they were expecting 15 000 people to attend.

President Jacob Zuma was expected to address the crowd along with SACP general secretary Blade Nzimande, and Cosatu president Sdumo Dlamini.

Mampane said more people were expected to arrive on buses later.

Those at the venue were in good spirits with some singing and dancing. Others had brought picnic blankets and cooler boxes to help them get through the day.

Thabiso Mokwena said he was there to celebrate the day, despite not having a job.

"I'm here to support Cosatu to continue fighting for workers' rights and protect them. Also to ensure that the day I start working the environment will be conducive," he said.
