Snow forecast not fun and games, AA warns

Cape Town - The forecast of snow in parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State has led to a warning  from the Automobile Association (AA) for motorists to steer clear of the affected roads.

The AA in a statement urged drivers in and around these areas to take extra care from Sunday to Tuesday as inclement weather is expected on sections of the route.

This after the N3 Toll Concession issued an advisory earlier of a high likelihood that residents and travellers may be snowed in as roads could be closed in the interest of safety, following communication from the SA Weather Service that heavy snowfalls are expected in parts of these regions.

Motorists were further advised to check weather and conditions warnings regularly and to travel with extra blankets, food and medication should they be caught in closures.

The AA warned that the inclement weather may affect communication systems, resulting in limited or unavailable cellphone reception.

Traveller24 earlier reported that snow is possible on Saturday night in the Kokstad area of KZN, the KZN Drakensberg, Lesotho and the KZN Midlands, while on Sunday it is expected in the KZN Midlands, the KZN Drakensberg and in Lesotho.

A possibility of light snowfalls over the high peaks of the coastal mountains west of Port Elizabeth was also forecast, while snow is also expected over the Winterberg overnight.
