Suspected hijackers arrested hours after motorist shot

Durban – Police moved swiftly on Monday morning, hunting down and arresting two suspected hijackers just hours after they allegedly shot and wounded a motorist in New Germany, Pinetown.

According to police, the suspects, aged 38 and 43, were nabbed in Kwadabeka on Monday.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said the suspects hijacked a man in a Hyundai in the morning.

"It is alleged that he was shot in the leg and stomach by the suspects."

Zwane said the victim, who was armed, shot back at his assailants, but was overpowered and disarmed.

"The suspects then fled the scene in his vehicle. The victim was taken to hospital for treatment for gunshot wounds."

Zwane said police opened a case of hijacking and attempted murder. Officers then followed up on information on the suspects' whereabouts, he said.

"They spotted a vehicle fitting the description of the hijacked vehicle at Kwadabeka area. Two suspects were arrested and were found in possession of a firearm suspected to be used during the shooting."

Zwane said the hijacked vehicle was recovered.

KwaZulu-Natal acting provincial commissioner Major General Bheki Langa praised officers for the swift arrest.

"I am pleased with the reaction of the police that led to the swift arrest of the suspects."
