Cape Town – Rescue workers are returning to Lily Mine in Nkomazi, Mpumalanga, on Monday after receiving confirmation that three people who have been trapped in a collapsed mine for as many days are still alive.
After "banging" on various areas of the caved in mine and waiting desperately for a response, rescue workers finally received it on Sunday night, tweeted Eyewitness News journalist Alex Eliseev.
The three workers were inside a lamp room when the mine collapsed on Friday morning.
The lamp room is near the surface and is used for charging, servicing, and issuing all cap, hand, and flame safety lamps.
A total of 76 miners were rescued after being trapped underground, reported News24.
The mine’s operations director, Mike Begg, told EWN that "today is the day" when all efforts will be made to rescue the trapped trio.
