Truman Prince's fate still in the balance

Cape Town – Beaufort West Mayor Truman Prince might know his fate by the end of the week.

The Central Karoo region of the ANC was expected to start disciplinary steps against him on Wednesday.

This followed a meeting between Prince and the provincial and regional leadership on Tuesday.

Prince is in trouble with the party over allegations that he requested a tender be given to a construction company which was "sympathetic and having a relationship with the ANC".

He called for the construction companies to benefit so they could, in turn, inject funds into the party's election campaign.

Both the national and provincial ANC have condemned his call.

The mayor also faces charges of assaulting a female traffic officer in Leeu Gamka in the Karoo recently.

DA Western Cape leader Patricia de Lille welcomed the disciplinary inquiry.

She called for Prince to be immediately suspended pending the outcome of the inquiry.

"The mind boggles that the ANC is handling this matter with kid gloves while Mr Prince has obviously brought the party into disrepute," she said.

De Lille said this was especially important in the build-up to the local government elections.

"ANC candidates like Prince, who besmirch the oath of their office, should not be allowed to continuously make a mockery of the communities they ought to serve."

Provincial ANC acting chairperson Khaya Magaxa said the matter should be finalised by Thursday.
