UK child sex fugitive's extradition hearing postponed

Cape Town - The extradition hearing of British fugitive Lee Tucker, who is wanted on multiple child sex charges in the UK, was postponed in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Tucker appeared in court on Friday, dressed in casual clothes.

He has been out on R150 000 bail since April 26, and has been residing in the Sea Point area.

Prosecutors asked Magistrate Grant Engel to postpone Tucker's final extradition application to November 28 and 29.

Tucker's attorney, Leon van der Merwe, agreed to the new date, and bail was extended.

Arrest in Cape Town

The 52-year-old helicopter pilot has been on the run for 15 years.

He was originally sentenced to eight years in prison in the Swindon Crown Court, South Wales, in 2001, but a technicality saw that sentence overturned and a retrial of his 42 child sex charges ordered.

He fled the country, but was arrested by police in Cape Town on behalf of UK police in March this year.

His offences are alleged to have occurred in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and was detected as part of a child paedophile ring in Bristol in 1998.

Engel in April declared Tucker a "fugitive of justice".
