Worker loses leg after getting trapped in machinery

Pietermaritzburg – A 27-year-old man sustained severe injuries when he was pulled into a machine at an industrial park in Pietermaritzburg.

The man was believed to be trapped for over an hour before paramedics were alerted to his predicament, ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said on Saturday. He did not identify the business.

"Shortly before 06:00, paramedics from ER24 arrived on the scene where they found the man still trapped in the machinery," Vermaak said.

"His leg was completely pulled into parts of the machinery and paramedics found that he sustained a traumatic amputation."

Maintenance workers managed to remove parts of the machinery before he was successfully pulled from the machine.

The man was in a critical condition. Paramedics managed to control the severe bleeding.

He was rushed to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg for emergency surgery.

The exact circumstances of the incident were not yet known, Vermaak added.
