Johannesburg – Council workers were held hostage and residents were intimidated and terrorised after the funeral of an alleged gang member in Etwatwa, Ekurhuleni, police said on Monday.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Wilfred Kgasago said gang members started terrorising the area after an alleged member of the OVL gang was buried on Saturday.
The funeral had been closely monitored by the police.
“After the burial groups of people purported to be members of the OVL gang ran amok, intimidating and terrorising residents in the area. A couple of incidents of council workers being held hostage were attended to by the law enforcers,” he said.
Members of the group were found holding water department workers hostage. They ran off and managed to evade police.
Kgasago said several reports of intimidation were received and police responded to each incident.
No one was injured and no arrests were made.
The situation had normalised by late afternoon, police said.
