Both Oscar and Reeva's fathers in court

Pretoria - Murder-accused Oscar Pistorius's father Henke was in the North Gauteng High Court on Thursday for final arguments in his son's trial.

He sat on the left-hand side of the court which was mostly occupied by the Pistorius family.

It was the first time that Pistorius's father and Reeva Steenkamp's father attended proceedings.

Pistorius is charged with murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year.

He shot her dead through the locked door of his toilet at his Pretoria home. Pistorius has denied guilt, saying he thought she was an intruder about to open the door and attack him. The State contends he shot her during an argument.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel began making his closing arguments shortly before 09:30.

The courtroom was packed to capacity for the proceedings, with the Pistorius and Steenkamp families, their friends, members of the public, and local and international media.

Pistorius cut a lone figure as he sat in the front of the court wearing his glasses, listening attentively to proceedings.

He is also charged with three contraventions of the Firearms Control Act - one of illegal possession of ammunition and two of discharging a firearm in public.

He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

Both Oscar and Reeva's fathers in court? as in they have two fathers each? are you sure this headline should not be Oscar and Reeva's fathers both in court, by chance?

People like reading too much into things. Oscar's father did not attend the trial not because of strained relations between them but because he was very emotional and said some things earlier on which the media focused on and would not be helpful to his son's situation. As a result he stayed away from the trial in order to help his son. But there's no doubt that he closely followed the trial. As for strained relations, it is not uncommon for tensions between parents and children to exist. But it doesn't mean that there is no love lost between the two. Relations between parents and children can be complex. As for us outsiders, lets allow justice to take its course. All I would like to see is justice for Reeva who cannot speak for herself. Oscar didn't do well in the witness box and that cannot be blamed on his father's absence in his childhood or during the trial.
