Nel highlights contradictions in Oscar's testimony

Pretoria - Prosecutor Gerrie Nel on Thursday pointed out what he said were numerous contradictions in the testimony of murder accused Oscar Pistorius.

Nel told the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria in his closing arguments that Pistorius was unable to explain why police would have tampered with his fans, duvet, and curtains at his home where he shot dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year.

It was improbable that police would have moved all these items while they did not even know his version of events.

"The police couldn't have done that. That's just impossible," said Nel, adding that the court could not entertain the highly improbable.

He said Pistorius had continuously tailored the evidence he presented to suit his own version.

Pistorius is charged with Steenkamp's murder on Valentine's Day last year.

He shot her through the locked door of his toilet at his Pretoria home.

Pistorius has denied guilt, saying he thought she was an intruder about to open the door and attack him.

The State contends he shot her during an argument.

Pistorius is also charged with three contraventions of the Firearms Control Act, one of illegal possession of ammunition and two of discharging a firearm in public.

He has pleaded not guilty to these charges as well.

I find it very disturbing that the judge seems to be attributing more significance to Oscar's cell phone being charged than to Reeva's last prophetic words. If Nel gets one more bite at the apple, he needs to clean this up. Those text messages were not "arguments." They reflected the emerging realization by Reeva that this was not a healthy relationship. Fear of someone goes to the very bedrock of your relationship with that person. Even Oscar knew how damaging this was. So why did Reeva continue to see him? She told us that too. "ALL I WANT is to love and be loved - to be happy and make someone SOO happy." This was one week before Valentine's Day. She had held out this long. Why throw it all away now and be alone on that day? Maybe she could find a way to not trigger Oscar's anger. Yes, that's it! She would just try harder, she thought. Sadly, the judge just doesn't get it. This was not an Argument. It was the State of this Union just days before he killed her.
