ANC Gauteng goes ahead with conference

Johannesburg - The ANC in Gauteng has reached the 70% quorum of branches allowing it to proceed with its provincial conference, it said on Wednesday.

"We have PGC [provincial general council] of the leagues and RGCs [regional general councils] will take place next week," spokesperson Dumisa Ntuli said in a statement.

"The branches are currently engaged with the discussion documents to the conference."

The conference, which will take place in Pretoria from 25 and 28 September, will elect new provincial leaders.

According to reports, some branches in the province were unhappy with the two centres of power scenario emerging ahead of the conference.

The leader of the party in the province has usually been the premier. However, current ANC Gauteng chairperson Paul Mashatile was reportedly expected to retain his position and Premier David Makhura to be his deputy.

Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula had reportedly been approached to stand for chairperson of the province.

Ntuli on Wednesday said the process for the election of the leadership was going well.

"The process for lobbying and electing leaders started early this month with many branch general meetings scheduled to take place until September 2014.

"The process for nomination is currently proceeding well and we don’t expect disruption of meetings as many of our members are highly disciplined."

Branches had started nominating people for the provincial executive committee and final voting would take place at the conference.

Any ANC member in good standing was eligible for nomination.

A person standing for a place on the PEC had to be nominated by five branches or more.
