ANC bigwigs in PE to fix infighting

Port Elizabeth - Senior ANC officials are believed to be attending a meeting in Port Elizabeth on Sunday to deal with infighting in its branches in the region, the SABC reported.

President Jacob Zuma, his deputy Cyril Ramaphosa and party secretary general Gwede Mantashe were reportedly at the meeting.

The ANC disbanded its regional leadership in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro in December last year and replaced it with an interim task team.

Opposition parties such as the Democratic Alliance and Economic Freedom Fighters are looking to take control of the region from the ANC in next year's local government elections.

On Freedom Day, EFF leader Julius Malema told residents the party was working to take control of it the metro.

The DA is also serious about winning the metro. According to City Press it was prepared to form an alliance with ideological rivals to dislodge the ANC.

During a DA chairmanship campaign bid last week, Eastern Cape DA leader Athol Trollip said the party’s main objective in next year’s election was to win the metro.

He said they had begun talks with potential coalition partners in the event that the party did not get an absolute majority to govern the metro, which covers Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage, according to City Press.

Earlier last week, the ANC government announced it would spend R4.6bn on housing projects in the area.

The projects were expected to start on Monday, exactly a year before the 2016 local government elections.
