ANC expels 22 Limpopo councillors

Johannesburg - The ANC's national disciplinary committee has dismissed an application by 22 Limpopo councillors for a review of their expulsion from the ANC, chairperson Derek Hanekom said on Tuesday.

"The NDC rejected the five arguments presented by the councillors and provided full reasons in its nine-page finding," he said.

The councillors alleged that the provincial disciplinary committee (PDC) hearing was irregularly conducted.

Hanekom said the NDC found that the failure of the 22 councillors to attend the disciplinary hearing, which was held between 27 June and 29 June, prejudiced their case and they had no valid excuse for not attending.

The NDC also found that the charges were properly served on the councillors by the deputy sheriff of the high court. The provincial disciplinary committee was entitled to proceed with the hearing in their absence, hear evidence from ANC witnesses and make its finding.

"The NDC therefore dismissed the application for review by the 22 applicants, and the sanction of expulsion by the PDC was confirmed," he said.

The councillors, from Mogalakwena municipality, were expelled on 6 July.

They were suspended after reports that they had attended a council meeting with opposition parties in April, where discussions around removing the mayor, chief whip and some members of the executive committee, were held.
