ANC retains seven wards in by-elections

Johannesburg - The ANC has retained seven wards in by-elections held in the Free State, North West, Limpopo and Western Cape, according to results posted on the IEC website on Thursday morning.

The results of by-elections in the hotly contested disbanded Mtubatuba municipality in KwaZulu-Natal were still outstanding by 08:30.

Free State

The African National Congress's Diphapang Elias Sefatsa won Ward 23 in the Maluti a Phofung (Qwa-Qwa) municipality with 79.98% of the votes.

The ward was contested by the ANC and the African People's Convention.

It became vacant when the previous ANC councillor resigned.

The ruling party also held onto Ward Seven in the Mantsopa (Ladybrand) municipality, where Abednego Lephallo Kouveldt won with 51.19% of the vote.

The previous ANC councillor had died.

The ward was contested by ANC, Congress of the People and the Democratic Alliance.

Limpopo

The ANC also retained its ward in the one by-election held in Limpopo.

Ward 18 in the Greater Tubatse (Burgersfort/Ohrigstad/Eastern Tubatse) municipality was won by Themba Jackson Ngwatla with 42.43% of the vote.

The ANC went up against an independent candidate and the DA.

The ward became vacant when the previous ANC councillor was expelled by the MEC.

North West

In the North West, Ward Four in the Mamusa (Schweizer-Reneke) municipality was uncontested with only Maleseso Vivian Lee standing.

The ward became vacant when the previous ANC councillor died.

Western Cape

In the two by-elections held in the Western Cape, the DA retained its ward in the Oudtshoorn municipality and the ANC retained its ward in the Langeberg (Robertson) municipality.

Ward Two in Langeberg was won by Andile Joseph Shibilia with 51.45% of the vote.

The previous ANC councillor resigned.

The ward was contested by the ANC, DA and Cope.

In Oudtshoorn the DA retained Ward Seven, which was won by Leslie Patrick Orson Wagenaar with 79.71%.

The ward was contested by the DA, ANC and Unemployed Peoples Association.

The ward became vacant when the previous DA was expelled from the party.

KwaZulu-Natal

In KwaZulu-Natal 19 by-elections were held in the disbanded Mtubatuba municipality.

Results from the by-election were expected later on Thursday.

Another two by-elections were held in KwaZulu-Natal in the Ingwe (Creighton) and Ubuhlebezwe (Ixopo) municipalities.

The ANC retained both wards.

Ward Nine in the Ingwe municipality was won by Zamambo Prisca Mkhize with 74.00%.

The ward was contested by the ANC, IFP and NFP.

Ward Two in the Ubuhlebezwe municipality was won by the ANC's Thembinkosi Ernest Tenza with 94.18%.

The ward was contested by the ANC and Inkatha Freedom Party.
