DA cautions on ending Limpopo intervention

Cape Town - Ending national government's intervention in Limpopo should not be rushed, the DA said on Tuesday.

"It would be a dereliction of duty on the part of the NCOP [National Council of Provinces] to allow the Limpopo provincial government to return to its previous desolate state by rushing this proposal through the House," DA MP Elza van Lingen said in a statement.

Van Lingen was reacting to a letter sent by Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene to NCOP chairperson Thandi Modise, reminding her that Cabinet earlier this year had resolved to end the intervention in Limpopo.

The letter was published in a parliamentary document earlier on Tuesday.

Van Lingen said the onus was now on the NCOP to concur with this request.

"The DA on the select committee on co-operative governance and traditional affairs will expect a full review of all the findings of the task team so that the NCOP can be satisfied that this termination is indeed warranted," she said.

National government has placed five Limpopo departments under administration: education, health, public works, transport, and treasury.
