De Lille named DA Western Cape leader

Cape Town – Cape Town mayor Patricia De Lille was named the Democratic Alliance’s Western Cape leader on Saturday, after the party’s provincial vote saw her appointed to the post ahead of counterpart Lennit Max.

The results were read out at a packed His People’s Church in Goodwood, Cape Town, at 16:25, with just under a thousand people present at the venue, event organisers told News24.

The DA’s Greg Krumbrock stated that 30 400 entries were made, just before reading out the results of the elections for six different positions.

De Lille won the position of party provincial leader with 69% of the vote, to Max’s 31%.

'Humbled'

“Baie Dankie! Thank you very much!” De Lille said to the jubilant crowd after being named new party leader in the province.

“I’m very humbled by the confidence you’ve shown in me. As I stand here, I want to pay tribute to Helen Zille.

“Over nearly a decade now, Helen has done more than anyone else in this country to realign opposition politics.

“She has lead the DA to become the real fighting force that can offer a new path for our country. Thank you Helen.

“The Western Cape is the heartland of the DA, and it’s going to stay that way,” she added.

Results round-up

The rest of the party’s provincial results in the province were as follows:

- Four additional members to Western Cape leadership: Dan Plato, Tijman van Essen, Christelle Vosloo, JP Smith

- Three deputy chairpersons: Grant Twigg, Memory Booysen, Albert Fritz

- Provincial chairperson of finance in the WC: Andricus van der Westhuizen

- Provincial deputy leader: Bonginkosi Madikizela
