Johannesburg - Tommy Makgatho, the great-grandson of the ANC's second president Sefako Makgatho, expressed appreciation on Monday that the presidential guesthouse was being named after his ancestor.
"On behalf of the family of the direct descendants of Sefako Makgatho, the SMMM Foundation conveys its utmost gratitude for the naming of the presidential guesthouse after their ancestor," Sefako Mapogo Makgatho Memorial (SMMM) Foundation CEO Khentu Pitje said.
During his State of the Nation address on Thursday, President Jacob Zuma announced the renaming of the guesthouse in Pretoria.
He also said that the diplomatic guesthouse would be named after diplomat Johnny Makatini.
According the ANC's website, Makgatho was elected president of the Transvaal Native Congress when the ANC was established in 1912, and held the position until 1930.
He was president general of the ANC itself from 1917 to 1924, and was ANC senior national treasurer from 1930 to 1933.
Pitje said the SMMM Foundation was recently set up to preserve Makgatho's legacy and heritage.
"He was highly regarded as a leader of his people, so much so that Nelson Mandela named his son after him," said Pitje.
