Malema arrives for EFF's first anniversary rally

Johannesburg - Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema arrived at Thokoza Park in Soweto, south of Johannesburg on Saturday to loud cheers from the crowd.

Wearing a red leather jacket, beret, scarf, white shirt and beige trousers, Malema went on stage and waved to the hundreds of supporters already inside the park.

Supporters whistled and waved back. He then walked off to the VIP marquee.

People clad in red EFF regalia danced with their hands in the air as the song "Malema o tshela thupa" [Malema cracks the whip] played.

They were entertained with a play titled The Coming Revolution, which  centred around Malema's exit from the African National Congress and the formation of the EFF

Malema, who was ANC Youth League president, was expelled from the ruling party following disciplinary procedures in 2012.

The play mocked members of the ANC much to the delight of the crowd.

Supporters wearing red T-shirts and berets listened attentively laughing occasionally as the actors made jokes.

Floyd Shivambu, the EFF's chief whip, arrived at the event in a white Porshe shortly after 15:00.

Party supporters were still making their way into the park where celebrations were expected to continue well into the night.
