Johannesburg - A Maths and Science Academy would greatly benefit Mpumalanga learners, Premier David Mabuza said on Saturday.
Such an academy would entice learners in the fields of maths and science, Mabuza said in a statement.
"We should not complain about the few number of science and maths students produced by the schools, but we should invest in their education in order to get more and good talent."
He said it was unfortunate that the learners, especially in the public schools, were not given the necessary resources to equip themselves in order to perform.
"Our schools are not equipped with the laboratories - at least the learners would have an advantage to see its equipment at the Academy before going to college," said Mabuza.
He said schools' performances in maths and science was declining because of challenges they face such as the lack of teachers in these fields, lack of textbooks and lack of excitement and interest from children.
He challenged companies including Eskom and other government stakeholders such as Sasol to be roped in and to investigate the implementation of a successful Academy.
More than 28 000 people in Mpumalanga benefited from Eskom in the previous financial year through its socio-economic development initiatives across the province.
