Moodey re-elected DA Gauteng head

Johannesburg - John Moodey has retained his seat as head of the Democratic Alliance in Gauteng at this weekend's provincial congress.

"I was elated to get an overwhelming majority," Moodey, who has held the post since 2012, said on Sunday.

He would not disclose the margin by which he beat MPL Refiloe Ntsekhe, who also contested the position, at the DA provincial congress held in Boksburg on Saturday.

"I took it as an opportunity to get a fresh mandate from the party in Gauteng," Moodey said.

Spokesperson Willie Venter said that Solly Msimanga was elected unopposed as provincial chairperson, while Michele Clarke was elected deputy chair.

Moodey said that he would now focus on growing the DA's support base in the province ahead of the 2016 local government elections and was confident of achieving victories in Gauteng municipalities.

He said local party structures would be beefed up with additional resources and training to mobilise support.

Moodey said he raised the possibility of moving the party's national headquarters to Gauteng, but that the feasibility and practicalities of such a move would need further discussion.
