Johannesburg - A request to Parliament's police portfolio committee for a special hearing into the saga around police intelligence head Richard Mdluli was denied on Thursday.
Portfolio committee chairperson Sindy Chikunga told the SABC that her committee was not a court of law and so it could not do anything.
"Charges needed to be responded to in a court of law...the portfolio committee can't do anything," she said.
Democratic Alliance MP Dianne Kohler Barnard on Wednesday said the "debacle" around the appointment of Mdluli had be subjected to proper parliamentary scrutiny.
She said she was writing to Chikunga to request a special hearing.
Criminal charges relating to the murder in 1999 of Mdluli's ex-girlfriend's boyfriend Oupa Ramogibe were recently withdrawn against him, court orderly Samuel Dlomo, Colonel Nkosana Sebastian Ximba, and Lieutenant Colonel Mtunzi-Omhle Mthembeni Mtunzi.
An inquest is being held into Ramogibe's death.
The fraud and corruption charges, relating to improper use of crime intelligence money, were also dropped.
