Office 365 Personal enables a user to install the software on the iPad as well as Android powered smartphones and tablets.
While there are similar Office-type applications on Google Play, they fall short of full compatibility with Microsoft's software. The latest version offers desktop versions of programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
In addition, users also receive 20GB of OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive) storage.
"By offering Office 365 Personal, in addition to Office 365 Home and Office 365 University, we are better positioned to deliver the right Office to a broader range of South African households - whether it's an individual or a family of five," said Uriel Rootshtain, Business Group lead of the Office Division at Microsoft South Africa.
The expansion of the software to mobile devices is part of CEO Satya Nadella's vision for the company.
Nadella caused a stir when he announced that Office would be available for the iPad, and the app rocketed up the App Store charts.
The strategy is part of Microsoft's vision to deliver content and services on whatever device consumers use.
Office 365 Personal costs R599.99 per annual subscription.
