Cape Town - Four South Africans are in the running to win the Innovation Prize for Africa with inventions that improve the lives of ordinary people on the continent.
Ashley Uys developed a new way to screen pupil response to light emissions. This may be used to determine substance abuse and is less invasive than previous methods.
Elise Rasel Cloete developed software that is able to trace livestock via an ear tag. This could decrease the incidence of theft and conflict as well as indicate grazing patterns.
Dr Nicolaas Duneas has come up with a novel way to stimulate bone growth. His Altis Osteogenic Bone Matrix is an injectable bone-graft product made from pigs and it can be used to stimulate a person's tissue regeneration process.
An invention by Viness Pillay is set to make tablets more palatable for children with the WaferMatTM. The tasty wafer dissolves in three seconds and makes administering drugs to children less painful.
African challenges
These South Africans will face off with six inventors and entrepreneurs from all over Africa in Nigeria on 5 May where a panel representing private equity investors, seed funders and venture capitalists who are looking for solutions to meet uniquely African challenges.
"As global leaders gather for the 2014 World Economic Forum on Africa to discuss approaches to inclusive growth and job creation, the IPA 2014 innovators demonstrate that the best way to achieve equitable economic growth for all Africans is to invest in local innovation and entrepreneurship," said Jean-Claude Bastos de Morais, founder of the African Innovation Foundation and the IPA.
The organisation received around 700 applications from 42 Africans to participate and win the $100 000 prize.
