SA social justice news website launched

Cape Town - A South African community project has launched a news website that focuses on issues of social justice.

GroundUp was formed in April 2012 and launched their website on Wednesday with a focus on community news reporting and opinion from local activists.

"We are a community journalist project. We report stories from South Africa's townships. Most of our stories are about health -especially HIV, TB and sanitation -, education, women's rights and immigrant's rights," the organisation said on its website.

They also invite members of the public to make submissions to the platform and have attracted opinions by Doron Isaacs, deputy general secretary of Equal Education, and human rights lawyer Fatima Hassan.

The website has also found support from at least one prominent South African.

"Support a free press? This news website @GroundUp_News needs your support READ http://groundup.org.za/," wrote Treatment Action Campaign chair Zackie Achmat on Twitter.

The site is intended to be published on a weekly basis and is also focused on the training of journalists.

"Our journalists used to be activists in South Africa's best social movements. They have joined GroundUp because they want to learn to become good journalists," the organisation said.
