Cape Town - The City of Cape Town will give residents the opportunity to gather together for a night vigil to honour the late Nelson Mandela’s life on the eve of his funeral.
The vigil will take place on the Grand Parade, starting at 18:00 on Saturday 14 December 2013.
The City announced that drummer Mapumba Cilombo will set the tone for the evening, followed by the Young Men’s Sporting Club choir and the Cape Town Tribute Band with Blackie Tempi.
Just before 20:00 popular artists Arno Carstens, Jimmy Nevis and Freshlyground will perform their tributes to Madiba.
The world's attention has turned to Madiba's hometown of Qunu, as preparations continue for his funeral on Sunday 15 December - the day before South Africa celebrates Reconciliation Day. The City will also be screening the funeral live on the Grand Parade in order to give members of the public a chance to gather together and honour Madiba.
The funeral will take place in Qunu in the Eastern Cape and is due to start at 09:00. Once the funeral has concluded, various artists will pay tribute to Madiba on the Grand Parade, including Goldfish, Emo Adams and the Delft Youth Jazz Band.
Monday 16 December also commemorates the Battle of Blood River and was also the day chosen by struggle hero Nelson Mandela to form his armed struggle against apartheid in 1961. Mandela then later chose 16 December as the National Day of Reconciliation after he became South Africa's first democratically elected president.
Cape Town Mayor Patricia De Lille is set to commemorate the national public holiday by opening a special commemorative walk along Cape Town’s fan walk route.
The Reconciliation Walk will start at 11:00.
An interfaith group is set to make its way from the Bo-Kaap Museum to Prestwich Memorial Square, where community leaders will speak about the value of living in an integrated city.
This will be followed at 12:00 by a brief ceremony on Prestwich Memorial Square on Somerset Road where De Lille, and the Western Cape Government MEC for Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, will lay their hands in moulds to be set in a slab along the walk – to solidify the city's
The Masiphumelele Choir will sing the South African national anthem to honour the moment before the Reconciliation Walk group departs Memorial Square for the Cape Town Stadium forecourt.
The Reconciliation Walk will feature something for everyone – young and old – including buskers, face-painters, musicians, stilt-walkers, mimes and jugglers. There will be performances by dancers, gymnasts and musicians, as crowds walk with Mayor De Lille along Reconciliation Walk. Audiences will enjoy a range of music styles, including kwaito, sakkie-sakkie, salsa, hip-hop, pantsula, and Afro-fusion.
Awaiting walkers in the Cape Town Stadium forecourt will be a concert starting at 13:00 and a multi-cultural food market. The line-up of artists for the concert includes celebrated singer, Vicky Sampson; Afrikaans singer/songwriter, Kurt Darren; all-round entertainer, Emo Adams; hit soul-house duo, Liquideep; and melodic-rock singer/songwriter, Arno Carstens.
