Doing things in the nude is becoming more popular as individuals seek to rid themselves of their daily constructs and revel in the liberation of their naturalness.
According to the South African Naturist Federation (Sanfed) this lifestyle choice has been growing rapidly in South Africa, from 130 people in 2009 to more than 8 000 members currently.
While public nudity in South Africa is not legal it is allowed within certain parameters and things are most certainly changing in response to this lifestyle choice. In fact you can even find a list of social nudity places in Africa on Wikipedia – almost all exclusively in South Africa. The key thing is to not associate or confuse nakedness with being sexual.
So if you too feel your attitudes towards all-naked fun is relaxing, why not consider this round-up of naturist activities.
Naturist safaris
Richtersveld National Park does not have an actual naturist resort but avid naturists suggest its expanse, lack of crowds and breathtaking natural beauty make it the ideal setting for getting rid of your clothes when your group is alone.
Otherwise, just two hours outside Johannesburg you’ll find Kudumanzi Nudist EcoPark, which caters for less than 20 people at a time. Hike to the nearby waterfall or indulge in a naturist game drive. The name of the resort is a combination of the native words “Kudu” (buck) and “manzi” (waterhole) and set across 150 square kilometer. It offers nudists the opportunity to roam free through bush lands populated with Giraffes, Impalas, Wildebeest and Zebras, as well as many other large species.

Naturist Wine tasting
Briton Mark Taylor and his wife are the proud owners of the local family naturist resort Vasnat near Cape Town. “Equating sex with no clothes is the biggest misconception that the lifestyle faces,” says Taylor. The resort has a thriving events list with the upcoming wine-tasting event being the next buff item taking place. Set for Thursday evening, 31 January 2013 Frogitt and Fonkel is hosting the tasting featuring six different wines accompanied by meat and cheese platters.

The idea of cruising along the open seas, with nothing around for miles on end, sounds relaxing even with your clothes on. According to the owners of Vasnat, as mentioned above, naturist sailing is a great way to spend a holiday and it’s a popular choice with guests. The week-long trips are usually scheduled from June and take you to some of the most beautiful areas of Greece. Guest will find themselves on board a four double cabin, three shower room catamaran with its own skipper and all the freedom necessary to enjoy both the social aspect of sailing and naturism as well as quiet time to be by yourself.
Otherwise naturist might be interested in this Shoes only cruise. As the name suggests, you need not pack much more than a few pairs of slops, maybe some strappy stilettos and a pair of slippers. Clothes are optional during this Caribbean cruise and the itinerary is packed with nude beaches, erotic parties and superb 5-star dining.

Kiepersolkloof Village is the oldest private naturist area in South Africa, located between Koster and Swartruggens, about two hour’s drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria. Centred around two dramatic gorges on 207 hectares of bushveld, naturists can enjoy plenty of walking trails and birdlife. Facilities include a swimming pool, chalets, a guest lodge, caravan park and tent area. Otherwise revel in the remote atmosphere of hiking through the Cederberg. Also not a specified naturist resort, you need to be cautious and ensure your own privacy and those of others when deciding its safe to take it all off and enjoy nature at its very best.

Head to the Striptease trail deep in the heart of one of South Africa’s most ancient and beautiful indigenous forests, the Tsitsikamma. The River trail consists of 11 natural rock pools, set along 5km of this spectacular Garden Route forest and is managed by the Tsitsikamma Lodge and Spa. Because the trail is booked and then reserved exclusively for you and your partner, privacy is guaranteed.
Each of the 11 pools are said to be named and guests are encouraged to have a bit of fun with this, discarding more and more items along the so-called striptease trail: The first crystal clear rock pool is known as the Pebble pool.
