Afghan court sentences 4 to death after mob killing

Kabul - Four people were sentenced to death by a Kabul court on Wednesday for their part in a mob which burned and killed a woman last month.

Farkhunda, aged 27, an Islamic studies graduate, was murdered by a mob outside a mosque in the capital on March 19 after she was wrongfully accused of burning a Koran.

The judge, Saifullah Mujadidi, said that the four men were sentenced to death "according to the Criminal Code and the Elimination of Violence against Women law."

The attack took place in broad daylight in view of police.

The judge sentenced eight other suspects to 16 years in prison, but said that "the verdict is not final, and they have the right to appeal".

The trial was broadcast live on local television.

Nineteen policemen in custody will be sentenced on Sunday, the court decided.

The trial is being seen as a test for Afghanistan's justice system, which has been criticised for failing to ensure women's rights.
