Canadian duck helper gets 90 days in jail

Montreal - A Canadian woman who caused the deaths of a motorcyclist and his teen daughter while trying to help ducklings cross a busy highway south of Montreal got 90 days in jail on Thursday.

Emma Czornobaj, 26, was found guilty in June of criminal negligence causing the deaths.

She will be allowed to serve the sentence on weekends, the judge said, but is also prohibited from driving for 10 years and must perform 240 hours of community service.

Czornobaj had faced up to a possible life sentence.

In June 2010, she had stopped her car in the left lane of a highway south of Montreal.

The court heard she was trying to round up a gaggle of ducklings that had been wandering in and out of traffic when an unsuspecting 50-year-old motorcyclist slammed into the back of her car at more than 105km/h.

Both the motorcyclist and his passenger, his 16-year-old daughter, died in the crash.
