Ex-officer not charged in fatal Milwaukee shooting

Milwaukee - A prosecutor says he won't file charges against a white former Milwaukee police officer in the fatal shooting of a black man.

District Attorney John Chisholm announced on Monday that Christopher Manney won't face any charges in the death of Dontre Hamilton in April.

Chisholm says that "Manney's use of force in this incident was justified self-defence and that defence cannot be reasonably overcome to establish a basis to charge Officer Manney with a crime."

Manney said he moved to frisk Hamilton and he resisted, striking the officer with his own baton. Manney then opened fire, hitting Hamilton 14 times.

Hamilton's death preceded those of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York City, but the case hasn't attracted as much attention despite frequent, mostly peaceful protests.
